A 21-year-old tire technician who was planning his wedding and saving for his first home was killed when a truck suddenly collapsed on top of him during a roadside repair, a tragedy that has now resulted in a massive fine against his employer.

Niall Fawcett was working beneath a commercial truck on August 2, 2024, along a highway exit ramp near Bowdon, England, when the vehicle apparently slipped from a hydraulic jack and fell onto him, causing fatal head injuries.

More than two years later, a British court has ordered his employer, Halford Commercial Fleet Services Limited, to pay a £600,000 fine, equivalent to approximately $807,000, after investigators uncovered serious failures in the company’s safety procedures.

The devastating accident occurred along the M56 motorway in Cheshire, where Fawcett had been dispatched to replace a blown-out tire on a low-profile truck.

According to Britain’s Health and Safety Executive (HSE), the young technician was using a bottle jack, a compact hydraulic lifting device, to raise the heavy vehicle.

While he was positioned underneath the truck, it apparently slipped from the jack and collapsed onto him.

Fawcett suffered fatal injuries, leaving his family devastated and his plans for the future tragically unfinished.

But investigators soon discovered troubling details about the safety precautions in place when the young employee was sent to perform the repair.

The HSE determined that his employer had failed to properly assess the dangers associated with changing a tire on a low-profile commercial vehicle, particularly when working beneath a truck at the roadside.

Investigators also found that the company had not provided adequate instructions explaining when a damaged truck should be removed from the roadway for repairs rather than serviced where it had broken down.

Even more concerning, Fawcett had received his license to perform roadside commercial tire repairs less than four months before his death.

Despite his limited experience, the company had not implemented appropriate monitoring or supervision to ensure he was performing the work safely.

Those failures became central to the criminal prosecution against the business, previously known as Lodge Tyre Company Limited.

On November 3, 2026, the company pleaded guilty at Warrington Magistrates’ Court to breaching Britain’s Health and Safety at Work Act of 1974.

In addition to the £600,000 fine, the court ordered the company to pay £24,203 in legal costs and a £200 victim surcharge, bringing the total financial penalty to £624,403, or approximately $840,000.

For Fawcett’s grieving family, however, no amount of money can replace the young man whose life was cut short.

His mother, Sharon, delivered an emotional victim impact statement describing the future her son had been eagerly preparing to build with his partner, Megan.

“Niall was only 21 years old when he died. He had his whole life ahead of him,” she said.

The couple had been planning to marry the following year and were saving for a down payment on their first home. They had also been discussing starting a family together.

“Niall was building for a life he was excited for and this was taken from him in an instant,” his mother continued.

She emphasized that her son had simply gone to work expecting to return home safely.

“Instead, my son never came home,” she said.

The case has prompted renewed warnings about workplace safety, particularly for young employees performing potentially dangerous roadside repairs.

HSE Principal Inspector Laura Royales said the tragedy demonstrated why employers must thoroughly assess workplace hazards, provide clear instructions and ensure employees receive appropriate supervision.

Royales stressed that those precautions are especially important when workers are inexperienced or carrying out tasks involving heavy vehicles and lifting equipment.

The regulator also noted that companies must establish procedures for identifying situations in which roadside repairs are too dangerous to attempt.

Fawcett’s death has become a heartbreaking example of the consequences when those safeguards fail.

The court’s ruling brings an important chapter of the case to a close, but for his family, the loss remains immeasurable.
