A dream snorkeling excursion near the popular Indonesian vacation destination of Bali turned into a terrifying fight for survival when a tourist boat suddenly exploded and burst into flames, forcing four foreign visitors and their guide to jump into the ocean.
The frightening incident unfolded on Thursday, October 29, in Gamat Bay, off the coast of Nusa Penida, a picturesque island famous for its crystal-clear waters, dramatic cliffs and spectacular marine life.
According to local police, the boat, named Naomi, had departed around 12:30 p.m. carrying four international tourists on a private snorkeling adventure. Their itinerary included stops at Manta Bay, Crystal Bay and Gamat Bay, three destinations popular with visitors hoping to explore the area’s underwater attractions.
But just over an hour into the excursion, disaster struck.
At approximately 1:40 p.m., as the boat prepared to leave Gamat Bay, a loud explosion erupted from the vessel. Flames quickly spread, leaving the passengers with little choice but to abandon the burning boat.
The four tourists and their guide, identified as Made Wirya, immediately jumped into the water to escape the fire, according to the Klungkung Regency Police.
Their desperate escape was followed by a rescue operation that ended around 2:50 p.m., when another boat passing through the area came to their aid and evacuated everyone aboard the stricken vessel.

Miraculously, all four tourists and the crew survived. However, the captain, identified as 31-year-old I Kadek Dwiyana, suffered significant burns to his legs and was rushed to the emergency department at Gema Santhi Regional Hospital for treatment.
Authorities said the explosion may have originated near the boat’s battery system. Preliminary findings also raised the possibility that an electrical short circuit ignited fuel, although investigators have not determined the exact cause.
Adding to the mystery, the boat had reportedly undergone routine maintenance and repairs before the trip. The guide told police that safety equipment and the vessel’s technical condition had been inspected and deemed safe before departure.
Investigators are now gathering witness statements and examining the damaged vessel to determine what triggered the explosion.
The incident has drawn attention to boating safety around Nusa Penida, a major tourism destination approximately 15 miles southeast of Bali. Its stunning coastal scenery and rich marine life attract visitors eager to snorkel with manta rays and explore coral reefs.
Following the fire, local police urged marine tourism operators to carefully inspect their vessels, maintain safety equipment and prioritize passenger protection before heading out to sea.
For the four tourists, what began as a relaxing adventure in one of Indonesia’s most beautiful destinations ended with a narrow escape from a burning boat.
Authorities have not publicly identified the tourists, and the investigation remains ongoing.
