A college football game erupted into chaos Saturday when a Colorado State assistant coach was caught on video aggressively confronting one of his own players, grabbing him by the jersey and screaming in his face before teammates and staff rushed to separate them.

The disturbing altercation unfolded November 7 during Colorado State’s embarrassing 64-38 loss to No. 25 Boise State at Canvas Stadium in Fort Collins, Colorado.

The Rams were already struggling on the field when tensions boiled over along their own sideline, creating an ugly scene that quickly spread across social media.

Video captured by Denver sports reporter Jon Tritsch shows Colorado State strength and conditioning coach Shelton Bynum approaching fifth-year offensive lineman Toriyan Johnson from behind before grabbing his jersey and confronting him.

Johnson, who previously played at the University of Connecticut before following head coach Jim Mora to Colorado State, appeared to exchange heated words with Bynum as the confrontation intensified.

Other players and coaches quickly intervened, physically separating the two before the situation escalated further.

The footage circulated online during the game, drawing attention to the growing frustration surrounding a Colorado State program that has endured a disappointing first season under Mora.

The confrontation reportedly happened before halftime, when Boise State was already leading 29-10.

By the final whistle, the Broncos had piled up 64 points, exposing a Colorado State defense that entered the matchup allowing an average of more than 42 points per game, the worst mark among Football Bowl Subdivision teams.

The humiliating loss dropped the Rams to 3-6 overall and 1-4 in conference play, further intensifying scrutiny of Mora’s first year leading the program.

But it was the sideline incident, rather than the lopsided score, that became one of the biggest talking points following the game.

Mora addressed the confrontation at the beginning of his postgame press conference, acknowledging that he was aware of the video but had not yet watched it.

“Let me address the video that’s out there. I’ve not seen it, of Toriyan and our strength coach, getting into it,” Mora told reporters.

He suggested that emotions can sometimes run high in competitive sports but made it clear that such behavior was unacceptable.

“It’s a passionate game played by passionate people that are all alpha dogs, but there’s no place for that,” Mora said.

The coach added that he would review the footage and address the situation internally.

The cause of the confrontation remains unclear, and neither Bynum nor Johnson has publicly explained what triggered the argument.

The incident comes during an especially turbulent season for Colorado State, which hired Mora after his successful tenure at UConn.

Mora arrived with considerable expectations after guiding the Huskies to consecutive nine-win seasons, but his first year in Fort Collins has been marked by inconsistent performances and mounting frustration.

Earlier this season, Mora made headlines when he removed defensive coordinator Tyson Summers from his duties during a game against Oregon State.

The Rams’ defensive problems have continued under the new arrangement, culminating in Saturday’s disastrous performance against Boise State.

Despite the turmoil, Colorado State’s offense managed to score 38 points against the nationally ranked Broncos, with quarterback Hauss Hejny throwing for 253 yards and two touchdowns.

Unfortunately for the Rams, their defense had few answers for Boise State’s explosive attack.

The Broncos improved to 8-1 with the victory, while Colorado State suffered its sixth loss in seven games.

The Rams are scheduled to face Washington State on November 14, but questions surrounding Saturday’s sideline confrontation could linger as the team prepares for its next matchup.

For now, Mora has not announced any disciplinary action involving Bynum or Johnson.

What remains clear is that the heated exchange between a coach and his own player has added another troubling chapter to an already difficult season for Colorado State.
