Mark Zuckerberg’s recent participation in a jiu-jitsu tournament has garnered attention, not only for his success in winning gold and silver medals but also for an unexpected incident that occurred during one of his matches. According to a report, Zuckerberg was choked to the point of passing out by an opponent.

The incident was recounted by José Lucas Costa da Silva, an experienced Brazilian jiu-jitsu fighter who stopped the match when he heard Zuckerberg snoring after being placed in a chokehold. Despite the unusual turn of events, Costa da Silva described Zuckerberg as a “good sport” who seemed to be enjoying the moment. However, both Zuckerberg and Meta, where he serves as CEO, declined to comment on the matter.

Zuckerberg’s interest in jiu-jitsu and mixed martial arts (MMA) became public knowledge in August 2022 when he discussed it on an episode of the Joe Rogan Experience. In the interview, Zuckerberg expressed his fascination with the primal nature of MMA and his enjoyment of watching UFC fights. Last year, he even posted a carefully edited video of himself sparring with MMA fighter Khai Wu, which received praise from notable figures in the fighting community, including Conor McGregor.

Zuckerberg’s venture into jiu-jitsu comes at a time when his company, Meta, formerly known as Facebook, is undergoing significant changes and facing challenges. Meta has announced layoffs that are expected to affect around 21,000 employees. Additionally, the company has shifted its stance on remote work and now requires most employees to be present in the office three times a week, marking a departure from its previous pro-remote work culture.

Amidst these changes, Zuckerberg has taken a more assertive approach to Meta’s direction, expressing a desire for the company to become “scrappier.” However, the rebranding of Facebook to Meta and the company’s confidence in the metaverse as a viable product have faced skepticism and doubt from some quarters.

Nevertheless, despite the challenges faced by Meta, Zuckerberg remains committed to pushing forward with the metaverse project and shows no signs of slowing down his pursuit of jiu-jitsu. It appears that he will continue his training and participation in martial arts tournaments, undeterred by the occasional setbacks and knockouts he may encounter.

Mark Zuckerberg’s involvement in jiu-jitsu not only demonstrates his personal interest in the sport but also highlights his resilience and determination in pursuing his passions. Regardless of the outcome, whether it be success or passing out in a chokehold, Zuckerberg continues to strive for personal growth and finds inspiration in the primal nature of combat sports.
