According to sources familiar with the situation, disgraced former sports doctor Larry Nassar was stabbed numerous times at a federal prison in Florida following an incident with another inmate. Nassar is notorious for sexually abusing female gymnasts, including Olympic medalists. At the United States Penitentiary Coleman, where Nassar is serving his term, the assault took place on Sunday.
According to reports, Nassar was stabbed in the back and chest and is now in stable condition as a result of the event. Officers were working required extra shifts at the prison due to a staffing shortfall. The assault on Nassar brings to light existing worries about staffing shortages and jail safety inside the federal Bureau of Prisons.
The former sports physician was found guilty of sexually abusing athletes while employed by USA Gymnastics and Michigan State University. In addition, he admitted to having child pornography. During victim impact statements in 2018, where many athletes spoke about the abuse they had experienced over many years, Nassar’s misdeeds came to light.
Law enforcement organizations have come under fire for how they handled Nassar’s case. Further victims were allegedly assaulted while the FBI was aware of the claims due to “fundamental” mistakes the bureau made when looking into the sexual abuse charges. The FBI’s failure to respond to the charges against Nassar in a timely manner was exposed by the inspector general’s inquiry conducted by the Justice Department.
In settlements with the victims, Michigan State University and USA Gymnastics agreed to make sizeable restitution payments. In June 2022, the Michigan Supreme Court likewise denied Nassar’s appeals.
The stabbing of Nassar provides as a sharp reminder of the lasting effects his crimes had on the gymnasts he molested and of the fallout for everyone involved. The tragedy emphasizes the necessity for ongoing initiatives to guarantee the security and welfare of prisoners within the criminal justice system and to make those liable for such horrible acts accountable.
