Three young males were tragically found dead over the weekend at a petrol station in Hampstead, North Carolina. The individuals were recognized as Marine Lance Corporals serving at the well-known Camp Lejeune installation in the area. The shocking discovery has shocked the military community and beyond, leaving many in mourning and seeking explanations.
On Sunday morning, the Pender County Sheriff’s Office got a complaint of three unresponsive people in a personal vehicle at a Speedway gas station. The three Marines were found to be lifeless when deputies arrived at the area, which was about 29 miles (47 kilometers) southwest of Camp Lejeune. Medical professionals responded quickly, but despite their best attempts, all three of them were declared dead on the same day.
The public has not yet been informed of the reason of death. To clarify the circumstances surrounding this unfortunate loss, authorities are awaiting the autopsy results. The Pender County Sheriff’s Office has refrained from making any assumptions about the cause, saying that other potential causes could be involved.
One of the Marines was the subject of a missing person complaint, according to Sgt. Chester Ward of the Pender County Sheriff’s Office, but no other information was provided. He did, however, make the observation that there were no drugs in the car, suggesting that drug misuse might not have been a major factor.
Regarding allegations of wrongdoing in that case, Ward said, “We do not suspect anything as far as foul play in that matter.”
Lance Cpl. Tanner J. Kaltenberg, a 19-year-old from Madison, Wisconsin; Lance Cpl. Merax C. Dockery, a 23-year-old from Pottawatomie, Oklahoma; and Lance Cpl. Ivan R. Garcia, a 23-year-old from Naples, Florida, were the three service members who died. At Camp Lejeune, these gallant soldiers worked as motor vehicle operators for the 2nd Marine Logistics Group, Combat Logistics Regiment 2, and Combat Logistics Battalion 2.
First Lt. Raymond Fullbright, speaking on behalf of the 2nd Marine Logistics Group, expressed his sorrow and gave his sympathies to the departed Marines’ loved ones. The death of three young people has had a profound impact on the military community, and their colleagues are still reeling from the tragedy.
The commanding general of the 2nd Marine Logistics Group, Brig. Gen. Michael McWilliams, also expressed his condolences and offered assistance to those affected by this tragic loss. He underscored the Marine Corps’ dedication to offering resources to those affected so they can get through this trying period.
According to Sgt. Chester Ward, as the investigation continues, the cause of death could be known as soon as Wednesday.
The tragic loss of these three valiant Marines serves as a sobering reminder of the sacrifices made by service members while performing their duties. All individuals whose lives Lance Cpls Tanner J. Kaltenberg, Merax C. Dockery, and Ivan R. Garcia touched throughout their service will remember them and commemorate their legacy as the country mourns their passing. May their families find courage as they endure this unthinkable hardship, and may they rest in peace.
