Prince William is reportedly furious with King Charles after the monarch allegedly opened the door for Prince Harry and Meghan Markle to return to the U.K. — and agreed to pick up the tab.
The stunning move has reportedly left William “appalled,” with insiders claiming the Prince of Wales believes his father is being “weak” by trying to rebuild bridges with the Duke and Duchess of Sussex after years of royal drama, public attacks and bitter family fallout.
According to new claims, William, 44, is so angry over the situation that he has already distanced himself from his father at a major royal event and is now threatening to boycott Sandringham if Harry and Meghan are invited there.
The reported royal blowup comes as Harry, 41, and Meghan, 45, are said to be preparing for a highly watched trip back to Britain this summer, with their children, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet, potentially joining them.
For King Charles, 77, the visit would be deeply personal. The monarch has reportedly not spent meaningful time with his grandchildren in years and is said to be eager for a reunion while he continues to navigate his cancer battle.
But for William, the reunion attempt may feel like a betrayal.
Royal expert Tom Sykes claimed William was so furious over what he sees as Charles giving in to Harry and Meghan that he skipped a customary family lunch after Trooping the Colour last weekend. Instead, William reportedly left the celebration with Kate Middleton and their three children immediately after the RAF flypast.
The alleged snub is fueling speculation that tensions behind palace walls are worse than ever.
Sources close to William reportedly believe Charles should be showing more loyalty to his eldest son and heir, especially after the Sussexes spent years speaking publicly about their struggles inside the royal family.
Harry and Meghan stepped back from royal duties in 2020 and later made a series of explosive allegations about life inside The Firm. Their interviews, Netflix series and Harry’s memoir Spare deepened the divide and left William and Harry’s once-close bond in tatters.
Now, Charles appears determined to pursue peace — even if it risks angering the future king.
A friend of the monarch reportedly defended Charles’ decision by comparing it to the biblical story of the prodigal son, suggesting the king sees Harry’s return as a happy outcome for the family.
But William’s allies reportedly see it very differently. They believe the king is rewarding Harry and Meghan despite the pain and embarrassment the couple allegedly caused the royal family.
The stakes could get even higher if Harry and Meghan are invited to Sandringham, the royal family’s beloved country estate in Norfolk. William has reportedly threatened to boycott “the big house” there forever if the Sussexes are welcomed back.
Harry and Meghan are expected to be in the U.K. from July 6 to July 10 for events connected to the Invictus Games, which will be held in Birmingham next year.
One of the biggest questions now is where the Sussexes will stay.
According to reports, Buckingham Palace could be an option. The palace is currently undergoing a massive renovation, but insiders have pointed out that it remains one of the safest buildings in Britain, guarded by the Household Division, members of the Army and armed Metropolitan Police officers.
Other possible locations include St James’s Palace in London, Windsor Castle or even Frogmore Cottage, Harry and Meghan’s former U.K. home.
Frogmore has remained empty since the Sussexes were asked to leave in 2022. The property sits within the Windsor Castle security bubble, making it a potentially practical option if the family returns with Archie and Lilibet.
Harry has previously rejected offers from Charles to stay in royal residences during solo visits to Britain. But bringing Meghan and the children back could change the calculation, especially given the couple’s long-running concerns about security.
The Sussex family was last all together in the U.K. in June 2022 for Queen Elizabeth II’s Platinum Jubilee, when they stayed at Frogmore Cottage. Meghan was both booed and cheered outside St Paul’s Cathedral during a National Service of Thanksgiving.
Harry and Meghan later returned to Britain for the late queen’s funeral, though their children did not join them.
Harry has repeatedly expressed interest in reconciliation with his family. In May 2025, he told the BBC that he hoped for peace with the royals, even as tensions remained painfully unresolved.
He also flew to the U.K. alone after Charles was diagnosed with cancer, meeting with his father for less than an hour at Clarence House. During that visit, Harry reportedly brought along a framed photo of Archie and Lilibet for the king.
But while Charles may be ready to forgive, William appears far from it.
The alleged rift now leaves the royal family facing another public crisis: a king hoping to reunite with his younger son, a future king refusing to forget the past, and a Sussex return that could reignite one of the most bitter family feuds in modern royal history.
