Current Olympic Star Paralyzed After In-game Collision

Tragically, after a strange accident during a Swedish Women’s Hockey League game last Friday, two-time Olympic medallist and Finnish hockey player Sanni Hakala is dealing with life-altering injuries. The 26-year-old HV71 captain suffered a neck injury that left her paralyzed from the chest down and with diminished function in her hands and limbs. She crashed head-first into the goalpost.

The Tragic catastrophe: Hakala smashed into the goalpost during the opening period of the game versus Djurgårdens, causing a terrifying catastrophe. The Finnish forward was stretchered off the ice, the game was postponed by officials, and he was first transferred to a neighboring hospital before being flown to University Hospital in Linköping for surgery.
