Deranged Passenger Restrained by Passengers on American Airlines

In a harrowing incident, passengers and crew on an American Airlines flight bound for Miami International Airport found themselves in the midst of a chaotic scene as they had to take down and duct tape a screaming man during the flight. The unidentified individual had unleashed a meltdown just before boarding American Airlines Flight 948 at Brazil’s Rio de Janeiro/Galeão International Airport.

The unsettling episode unfolded as the distressed passenger, yelling “help” and “they’re killing me” in Spanish, prompted five brave men—four passengers and one airline employee—to work together in subduing him. Exclusive video footage from WPLG captured the intense struggle as the individuals used duct tape to restrain the man’s arms and head while fending off his punches in one of the plane’s galleys.

As the scene unfolded, attempts were made to tape the man’s mouth shut to control his continued shouting of “No.” Techniques such as asking him to “hold my hand” and “breathe” were employed by the individuals trying to calm him down. The cause of the meltdown remains undisclosed.

Despite the alarming ordeal, the flight managed to land in Miami 13 minutes ahead of schedule, according to FlightAware. However, no arrests were made in connection with the incident.

This unsettling event follows a similar occurrence on a Qantas flight QF46 between Bali and Melbourne, where a 28-year-old man had to be restrained after assaulting a crew member on December 30. The belligerent traveler, who made explicit threats, was subdued by five passengers, leading to his questioning by police without facing charges.

In both incidents, the challenges of maintaining order in-flight highlight the unpredictability and potential risks that can arise during air travel, underscoring the importance of vigilance and swift response by passengers and crew members alike.
