An Idaho judge isn’t mincing words when it comes to the defense team representing murder suspect Bryan Kohberger. In a scathing rebuke, Judge John Judge slammed Kohberger’s attorneys for their questionable tactics in attempting to gather information from potential jurors.
The drama unfolded during a hearing in Latah County, where Kohberger stands accused of brutally murdering four University of Idaho students in their Moscow home back in November 2022. As his legal team seeks to change the trial’s venue, they devised a questionnaire sent to hundreds of local residents — a move that didn’t sit well with Judge.
The judge’s frustration was palpable as he called out Kohberger’s defense for submitting the survey to approximately 400 individuals “without the permission of the court” and “without discussion with the state.” Among the questions raised were inquiries delving deep into the specifics of the case, including details that could potentially sway opinions and prejudice future jurors.
Prosecutors wasted no time in condemning the defense’s actions, highlighting the clear violation of a gag order surrounding the case. Bill Thompson, representing Latah County, minced no words, accusing the defense of disseminating misinformation under the guise of a questionnaire meant to gauge public sentiment.
Adding fuel to the fire, the defense’s choice of questions, allegedly constructed by a social psychologist, raised eyebrows for their inaccuracies. Even Kohberger’s own attorney admitted that many of the queries were “NOT factually correct,” casting further doubt on the integrity of the survey.
But perhaps most damning of all was Judge’s own assessment of the situation. Expressing astonishment at the lack of coordination between the defense and prosecution, Judge underscored the gravity of the matter, emphasizing the importance of safeguarding Kohberger’s right to a fair trial.
As Kohberger’s legal saga unfolds, the stakes couldn’t be higher. With the specter of the death penalty looming and emotions running high, the case serves as a stark reminder of the complexities and challenges inherent in the pursuit of justice. And with Judge’s admonition ringing loud and clear, one thing is abundantly clear: this trial is far from over.
