A Florida high school senior described by friends as a “sweetheart” and a “friend to everyone” was killed in a heartbreaking crash just hours before he was supposed to receive his diploma.
Christopher Brooks, 18, was on his way to graduation practice at South Fork High School in Stuart, Florida, on Thursday morning when his 2007 Honda Accord slammed into the back of a dump truck, according to authorities.
Martin County Sheriff John Budensiek said Brooks appeared to drive directly into the truck without braking.
“He drove straight into the back of the dump truck without apparently hitting the brakes and was dead on impact,” Budensiek told reporters.
Investigators believe Brooks may have been distracted, though officials have not yet said what the distraction was. Authorities also said they were unsure whether he was wearing a seatbelt, but Budensiek noted that the impact was so severe it likely would not have changed the outcome.
The crash left Brooks’ classmates devastated.
Some of his friends reportedly saw smoke rising from his mangled car and rushed toward the wreckage, only to be confronted with a scene no teenager should ever have to witness.
“They ran up and saw what no one should see,” Budensiek said. “And they’re so traumatized.”
The sheriff called the case one of the hardest kinds for first responders.
“These are the worst cases for us in law enforcement and fire [and] rescue to respond to because it could be anybody’s family member,” he said.
Budensiek said the tragedy was a painful reminder of how fragile life can be, and he warned drivers about the dangers of becoming distracted behind the wheel.
“This changes everybody’s life drastically,” he said.
Witness Lucia Fourie, a student at Treasure Coast Classical Academy, said she froze after seeing Brooks’ car hit the truck.
Another witness, semi-truck driver Bernard Blackshire, said he tried to pull the door off Brooks’ vehicle but could not get it open.
“We couldn’t ’cause it was stuck,” Blackshire said. “He had a subtle movement and then all of a sudden, he stopped. A lady was out here crying, it was just pretty sad.”
The dump truck driver was not injured, according to authorities. A semi-truck driver at the scene was also unharmed.
Brooks was a student in South Fork High School’s veterinary program and also played on the school’s bowling team.
Despite the tragedy, South Fork’s graduation ceremony still went forward. But Brooks was not forgotten.
A chair was left empty in his honor, draped in a black and red graduation gown to match the school’s colors. A graduation cap and bouquet were also placed at his seat.
According to reports, the school traditionally leaves an empty chair to honor students who are no longer there.
During the ceremony, Brooks was remembered in an emotional moment as students prepared to move their tassels.
“As we prepare to turn our tassels, we remember our dear friend Christopher Brooks,” one student said.
The tassel on the cap Brooks would have worn was then moved in his honor.
Friends remembered him as kind, funny and deeply loved.
Savannah Morris described Brooks as a “sweetheart.”
“He was very kind, always looking out for others,” she told WPBF.
Ryland Morris said Brooks was a “friend to everyone” and someone who was always cracking jokes.
Now, instead of celebrating the beginning of his next chapter, Brooks’ classmates and loved ones are mourning a young life cut short just hours before one of the biggest milestones of his life.
The Florida Highway Patrol is investigating the crash.
