Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton found herself amidst student protests during her visit to her alma mater, Wellesley College, on Saturday. Local news outlets reported that angry students circulated pamphlets around campus branding Clinton as Wellesley’s “most beloved war criminal” and accusing her of having “blood on her hands.”
The protest occurred as Clinton returned to campus to receive the honor of having a college building named after her. The demonstration also coincided with a women-led democracy summit on campus, which featured Clinton as a prominent figure.
While school administrators acknowledged the protest, they refrained from condemning it. Vice President and Dean of Students Sheilah Shaw Horton issued a statement urging protesters to adhere to the demonstration policy and the Code of Student Conduct to ensure their safety and that of the community.
This isn’t the first time Clinton has faced opposition during her visits to American universities. In February, protesters disrupted her appearance at Columbia University, labeling her as a “war criminal.”
The demonstration at Wellesley underscores the polarizing nature of Clinton’s legacy and her ongoing influence in American politics. It comes in the wake of Clinton’s recent remarks on the “Tonight Show” with Jimmy Fallon, where she urged voters to “get over” their qualms about the choices between former President Trump and President Biden.
Clinton argued that the decision should be straightforward, emphasizing the stakes of the election and portraying it as an existential question for the future of democracy in America.
The protest at Wellesley College serves as a reminder of the lingering controversies surrounding Clinton and the deep divisions within American society over her political legacy.
