‘He’s Fighting the Flight Attendant!’: Chaos Erupts on Delta Connection Flight to Detroit

A routine Delta Connection flight turned into a nightmare at 30,000 feet Thursday evening when a passenger allegedly tried to rip open an emergency exit mid-flight—then brawled with a flight attendant in front of terrified passengers.

Flight 3612, operated by SkyWest Airlines, was en route from Omaha, Nebraska to Detroit, Michigan when the man suddenly launched into what one witness called “a full-on freakout.”

“He’s fighting the flight attendant right now, trying to open the emergency exit,” the pilot urgently told air traffic controllers around 7 p.m., according to cockpit audio obtained by LiveATC.net.

The cockpit crew wasted no time. The Embraer 175 was diverted to Cedar Rapids, Iowa, where local law enforcement met the aircraft on the tarmac.

Footage shared on social media shows the suspect being escorted down the narrow aisle by uniformed officers, his hands zip-tied behind his back as stunned passengers looked on in silence.

“We just wanted to get to Detroit,” one passenger told a local news outlet. “Instead we ended up on the ground in Iowa with cops swarming the plane. It was surreal.”

The flight eventually made it to Detroit—but two hours behind schedule.

SkyWest, which operates regional flights for Delta, issued a sharp statement following the incident:

“SkyWest has zero tolerance for unruly behavior. The safety of our passengers and crew is our top priority.”

Neither SkyWest nor the FBI, which typically handles in-flight disturbances, immediately confirmed whether charges had been filed. The identity of the man has not been released.

The latest incident comes amid a spike in midair disruptions across the country.

So far in 2025, the Federal Aviation Administration has logged over 870 reports of unruly passengers, part of a disturbing trend that shows no signs of slowing. Incidents have ranged from physical altercations to attempts to storm cockpits and open cabin doors—acts that pose grave risks at altitude.

Aviation analyst Robert Sumwalt, former chairman of the National Transportation Safety Board, called the increase “deeply concerning.”

“When a passenger tries to open a door midair, they’re not just breaking the law—they’re endangering every soul on board,” Sumwalt told NewsFlight Daily. “It’s a federal offense for a reason.”

Why the man attempted to open the door remains unclear. Some onboard reportedly speculated he was intoxicated or having a mental health episode.

Whatever the motive, experts stress that such behavior has real consequences. In many cases, offenders face federal prison time and lifetime flight bans.

As of Friday morning, the FAA and local authorities were continuing their investigation.
