What started as a magical night for Beyoncé fans quickly turned into a nightmare after her Atlanta concert ended in a chaotic scene that left 11 people injured — all because of a bug.

In the early hours of July 15, just after midnight, fans were leaving the final Cowboy Carter tour stop at the Mercedes-Benz Stadium and heading home via the Vine City MARTA station when panic erupted on an escalator.

According to officials, a 10-year-old girl spotted a cockroach — or possibly a palmetto bug — and screamed. That scream sparked panic among the crowd, triggering what MARTA police called a “stampede” on the escalator. The moving staircase suddenly sped up and then jolted to a stop, throwing people into a terrifying human pileup.

Video from the scene shows concert-goers tumbling over each other while others screamed and tried to climb to safety. At least 11 people were injured, including one person who broke their ankle. Seven were hospitalized, two requested medical help after reaching their destinations, and one declined treatment.

“It just created a whole entire slide full of people,” student Jacobi Edwards told Fox 5. “It was crazy, it was chaotic.”

MARTA officials initially believed the escalator may have malfunctioned. However, a new statement from the escalator’s manufacturer, Schindler, suggests it may have simply been overwhelmed by the sheer volume of passengers. The unit reportedly accelerated and triggered its safety brakes as a result of being overloaded — not due to a mechanical failure.

Inspection records show the escalator had passed its latest safety check just five days before the incident, with its certification set to expire in August.

A graphic photo posted online shows one fan’s ankle bloodied and bandaged, offering a glimpse at the aftermath of the chaos.

Despite the frightening ordeal, MARTA says the escalator has since been barricaded and both the transit authority and Schindler are investigating the incident.

The bizarre and terrifying moment serves as a reminder of how quickly a packed crowd can descend into danger — even over something as small as a bug.
