Widow Stuns Court by Forgiving and Hugging the Man Who Killed Her Husband of 50 Years

In a Georgia courtroom on August 7, what began as a sentencing for a deadly hit-and-run ended in a moment so unexpected that it left even the judge at a loss for words.

Joseph Tillman, 39, had just been sentenced to 20 years for killing 78-year-old Chuck Johnson — a beloved husband, father, and grandfather — when the victim’s widow, Regina Johnson, did something no one saw coming. She stood, crossed the room, and wrapped her arms around the man who destroyed her world.

“I don’t think I’ve ever seen the wife of a victim hug the defendant where they killed somebody,” remarked Cherokee County Superior Court Judge Tony Baker, visibly moved by the scene.

The deadly crash happened in 2024, when Tillman — high on nitrous oxide — plowed into Chuck as he rode his electric bike in Cherokee County, then fled the scene. Prosecutors say Tillman’s reckless choices didn’t stop there — he lied to police and left the family searching for answers in the days after the crash.

Yet on sentencing day, Regina Johnson didn’t bring only grief and anger into the courtroom — she brought grace. Footage from WSB-TV shows her pulling Tillman into a long, emotional embrace, whispering into his ear, “I forgive you.”

Tillman, red-faced and tearful, clutched her tightly. “I’m so sorry. I’m so sorry,” he whispered back, over and over. Moments later, in a trembling voice, he addressed the court: “I pray that you hear my heart when I say I am truly, completely sorry.”

Outside the courtroom, Regina explained her decision: “God told me he needed a mom hug. Joey doesn’t know yet how much God loves him. He needs healing from his past, as we all do. That’s our heart and our prayer.”

Chuck’s daughter, Brittany McCarthy, delivered a far different message. Fighting back tears, she told Tillman, “I will always be the daughter of a man that you killed. You shattered my heart and forever changed my life because you chose to do drugs while driving. You became a deadly weapon, and my father paid the price.”

Tillman pleaded guilty to three counts of homicide by vehicle, felony hit-and-run, making a false statement, DUI, and reckless driving. Under his sentence, he will serve three years in prison, then spend two years in an intensive inpatient rehab program. The rest of his sentence will be served on probation.

Defense attorney Paul Ghanouni told reporters his client has “changed his way of life” and is on a “positive trajectory.”

For Regina Johnson, forgiveness doesn’t erase the pain — but it’s the path she says she must take. “It’s what Chuck would have wanted,” she said quietly. “That’s how we honor him.”
