A Florida man became an unlikely hero when he stopped a burglary in progress — all while wearing Batman pajamas.
According to the Cape Coral Police Department, the incident unfolded around 2:03 a.m. on Wednesday when Kyle Myvett, dressed head-to-toe in a Batman onesie, sprang into action after his home security cameras alerted him to suspicious activity outside.
Myvett told detectives he noticed someone rummaging through his truck, so he went outside to investigate. Moments later, he discovered the same suspect inside his neighbor’s garage. Without hesitation, Myvett detained the man and held him until officers arrived on the scene.
Police identified the suspect as 20-year-old Justin Schimpl, who is already known to law enforcement from prior investigations. Officials say Schimpl allegedly broke into both Myvett’s vehicle and his neighbor’s garage, stealing multiple items including two pairs of Ray-Ban sunglasses worth $300 each, cash, gift cards totaling more than $500, and a woman’s wristlet.
Schimpl reportedly claimed he had an accomplice, but police said the name he gave “changed multiple times” and no other suspects were found after a search of the area.
Schimpl now faces several charges, including two counts of burglary of an unoccupied conveyance, one count of burglary of an occupied dwelling, and two counts of petit theft under $750. His first court appearance is scheduled for September 29.
Thanks to Myvett’s quick thinking, Batman pajamas and all, the would-be burglar didn’t get far.
