A 17-year-old girl has died and three boys were injured after a masked attacker armed with a sword stormed a school in Sweden, authorities said.

The deadly attack happened Friday, Aug. 21, at Brinell School in Fagersta, about 100 miles northwest of Stockholm.

Police entered the school after reports of the attack and found the 17-year-old student dead on the premises.

Brinell School later confirmed the death in a statement.

“The police have confirmed that a person has died after today’s tragic incident at Brinellskolan in Fagersta,” the school said.

Officials said three other students were injured.

The victims were boys between the ages of 12 and 17, according to Region Västmanland.

Two of the injured boys underwent emergency surgery.

Their names have not been publicly released.

Police said the attacker entered the school around 2 p.m. wearing black clothing, a helmet and a mask that covered his face.

He was allegedly carrying a sword and attacked multiple people inside the building.

About 15 minutes later, police arrested an 18-year-old man following a standoff at the school.

He has since been charged with murder.

Authorities have not publicly released his name, but Swedish media reported that he is a former student at Brinell School.

Investigators are also looking into a TikTok account that reportedly posted four images of a sword-like object before the attack.

Police have not said whether the account belonged to the suspect or whether it was directly connected to the violence.

The area around the school remained cordoned off as investigators continued processing the scene.

Brinell School said officials were working to support students, staff and families affected by the attack.

“Our thoughts go out to the relatives and loved ones of the deceased, the injured and those affected in various ways by what has happened,” the school said.

Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson visited the area on Saturday and called the attack horrific.

“Once again, an attack on a school that shakes both the local community and our entire country,” he said.

Kristersson said his thoughts were with the victims, their families and everyone who was inside the school when the attack happened.

He described it as a normal school day that suddenly “turned into a nightmare.”

Police are continuing to investigate the motive and the suspect’s actions before the attack.
