A civil war has broken out inside Fox News after one of its veteran hosts dared to suggest conservatives may be overplaying the legacy of slain activist Charlie Kirk.
Howard Kurtz, longtime host of Media Buzz, stunned viewers Sunday when he declared live on air: “Charlie Kirk was not a saint.”
Kurtz reminded his panel that Kirk, who was assassinated last Wednesday while speaking at Utah Valley University, had once argued that “it’s worth it to have a cost of, unfortunately, some gun deaths every single year so we can have the Second Amendment.”
“His murder makes this feel like a very dangerous time,” Kurtz added, drawing an immediate backlash online — and from his own Fox colleagues.
Charlie Kirk, founder of Turning Point USA, rose from a little-known Illinois college dropout to one of the most influential right-wing firebrands of his generation. His speeches and podcast often went viral, praised by his followers as fearless but slammed by critics as incendiary.
Among his most controversial statements:
- Claiming that “prowling Blacks go around for fun to target white people.”
- Calling Islam “the sword the left is using to slit the throat of America.”
- Demanding “a Nuremberg-style trial for every gender-affirming clinic doctor.”
Despite the outrage, Kirk’s following only grew. He became a close ally of Donald Trump, who frequently praised him as “a fighter” and “one of the greatest voices for young conservatives.”
Kirk’s assassination during a campus Q&A session has rocked the conservative movement. Police say he was shot at point-blank range by a lone gunman, who was subdued by security. Investigators have not yet released a motive.
The killing has been framed by Trump supporters as an attack on the conservative movement itself.
President Trump wasted no time in posthumously awarding Kirk the Presidential Medal of Freedom — the nation’s highest civilian honor.
“Charlie Kirk was a warrior for freedom,” Trump said from the White House. “His voice will never be silenced. His blood is the seed of liberty.”
Vice President JD Vance described him as a “true friend” who “ran a good race,” while Kirk’s widow, Erika, vowed, “The movement my husband built will not die. My grief will echo around the world like a battle cry.”
Kurtz’s critique landed like a bomb inside Fox News.
Greg Gutfeld, the network’s late-night provocateur, mocked him openly: “Maybe we can tune in next week for a clarification… oh wait,” he sneered — a jab at Kurtz’s show being canceled.
Indeed, Media Buzz aired its final episode Sunday. Fox has already announced its replacement: The Sunday Briefing, hosted by Jacqui Heinrich and Peter Doocy.
At 71, Kurtz will remain as a contributor, but many insiders say his sharp take on Kirk was an unceremonious end to a decades-long run.
Social media piled on. “Leave it to Howie Kurtz to kick a hero when he’s down,” one X user fumed. Another blasted: “Howard just proved he was never one of us.”
The feud underscores how Charlie Kirk’s violent death has intensified divisions within conservatism.
To his followers, Kirk is now a martyr. To his critics — even some within the right — his legacy is complicated.
As one Fox insider told me bluntly: “This isn’t just about Charlie. This is about the future of the conservative movement under Trump. Do we lionize the rhetoric that brought us here, or do we step back and admit some of it went too far?”
For now, the conservative base seems united in grief, if not in direction.
Kirk’s funeral is set for next week in Arizona, where thousands are expected to gather.
And if the furious reactions to Kurtz’s comments are any indication, the fight over Charlie Kirk’s legacy is only just beginning.

No man is truly a saint, but Charlie Kirk was much closer than the commentator accusing him of not being one. He was a good man. A Godly man. And God will take care of His own.
True, Kirk was as much a ‘saint’ as the other ‘saints’… I’d give him a grade of ‘D’… 75% of doing good… 25% of doing bad… partly for the money…
When we accept Jesus as Lord of our lives we are referred as saints and priests.God sees him as one of his children and that is all that matters.Prople who do not read the Bible should have enough sense to keep their mouths close.Maybe this man could read the book Proverbs
Bowie Kurtz should be fired- he is always down grading conservatives and the current administration.
Looks like Fox News channel needs to fire Howard Kurtz
