A woman in California found herself trapped underneath a BART fare gate after allegedly trying to slip under the barrier without paying, creating an awkward scene that quickly spread across social media.
The incident was captured on video and later shared on Reddit, where viewers responded with a mix of jokes, criticism and speculation about how she was eventually freed.
BART has been installing a new generation of taller, more secure fare gates designed to make fare evasion more difficult. The upgraded barriers have reportedly helped cut down on people entering the transit system without paying, although some riders have still attempted to squeeze underneath them or follow closely behind paying passengers before the gates shut.
In the video, the woman appears to have already crawled partway beneath the gate before becoming stuck. She briefly looks back at the bystanders filming her, then lowers her head in what appears to be defeat.
A security guard soon enters the frame and looks down at the woman as she remains pinned beneath the barrier.
The woman appears to say something to the guard, but the surrounding noise makes her words difficult to understand.

“This is terrible,” the woman recording the scene can be heard saying, even as she continues filming.
She then explains that opening the gate could make the situation even more dangerous.
“We can’t even open it with you there,” she says. “That’s the crazy part. We can’t open it without harming you.”
The video ends before showing how the woman was removed, and no confirmed details have emerged about how long she remained stuck or whether the gate had to be taken apart.
The humiliating moment quickly became material for online jokes.
“Yup, that’s me, double cheeked up in a BART fare gate,” one Reddit user wrote. “You’re probably wondering how I got here. It all started 4 years ago…”
Another commenter jokingly asked whether the woman had really been trapped there for four years.
Others were less amused and argued that risking public embarrassment and possible injury was not worth avoiding the cost of a ticket.
“This implies that this person thinks the chance of being caught in a publicly humiliating position is worth less than the roughly $8 BART ticket,” one user wrote. “Don’t be this person. Value yourself more.”
Some viewers focused on the design of the gate itself, questioning why the barrier had enough space underneath for someone to attempt crawling through.
Another commenter suggested the gap may be connected to accessibility requirements under the Americans with Disabilities Act, which can require enough clearance for wheelchair users and other passengers with mobility needs.
Several people also speculated about how station workers may have freed the woman. One user suggested the gate might have needed to be disassembled, although that claim was not confirmed.
Others wondered whether she could be held financially responsible if the gate was damaged or if emergency work was required to release her.
BART has not issued a public statement about the incident. The woman has not been identified, and it remains unclear whether she received a citation, fine or any other penalty for the alleged fare evasion attempt.
