In a stunning and deeply divisive moment on the House floor Friday, Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y., used the aftermath of Turning Point USA founder Charlie Kirk’s brutal assassination to attack his character—sparking immediate backlash from conservative lawmakers and everyday Americans alike.

Ocasio-Cortez, one of only 58 Democrats who voted against a resolution honoring the slain conservative firebrand, claimed the tribute “pushes a legacy of bigotry,” despite calling his murder “horrific.”

“Charlie Kirk’s assassination was a horrific and vile attack, an incident of political violence,” Ocasio-Cortez said in her floor speech. “But the majority proceeded with a resolution that brings great pain to the millions of Americans who endured segregation, Jim Crow, and the legacy of bigotry today.”

Critics were quick to condemn her remarks, accusing the far-left congresswoman of using a national tragedy to score ideological points.

“Leave it to AOC to turn a murdered man’s memorial into a political rant,” Rep. Byron Donalds, R-Fla., told reporters after the vote. “She can’t bring herself to say his name without smearing him—and that tells you everything you need to know.”

Charlie Kirk, 31, was gunned down in July during a Q&A event hosted by his conservative youth organization at Utah Valley University. The shocking act of political violence sent ripples across the country and led to bipartisan calls for unity—at least, from most.

Kirk, a prominent supporter of President Trump and an outspoken critic of leftist ideology, had long warned about rising threats to free speech and conservative values on college campuses.

In the wake of his murder, President Trump personally ordered flags flown at half-staff for three days and called Kirk “a warrior for liberty, taken far too soon by the forces of hate.”

Ocasio-Cortez insisted her opposition to the resolution stemmed from Kirk’s ideology.

“Charlie Kirk’s rhetoric and beliefs were ignorant, uneducated and sought to disenfranchise millions of Americans,” she said Friday. “Far from the ‘working tirelessly to promote unity’ asserted by the majority.”

Despite her harsh words, Ocasio-Cortez ended her remarks with a nod to the family: “We continue to pray for Mr. Kirk’s family and loved ones… especially his children and his wife, whose grief cannot be measured.”

Many saw that as too little, too late.

Conservative commentator Dana Loesch called AOC’s vote “a slap in the face to the family of a murdered man.”

“She can’t even let the man be mourned in peace,” Loesch wrote on X. “Imagine using a widow’s heartbreak to dunk on your political opponents.”

House Republicans, led by Majority Leader Elise Stefanik, issued a statement Friday night calling Ocasio-Cortez’s remarks “disgusting and beneath the dignity of her office.”

“There was a time when political violence brought this country together,” the statement read. “Now we have elected officials justifying their votes with venom and hate.”

President Trump, who had previously praised Kirk as “one of the fiercest defenders of American greatness,” took to Truth Social Saturday morning.

“Charlie Kirk gave everything he had for this country—and for AOC to defame him after he’s been assassinated shows the cruelty and sickness of today’s radical Democrat Party,” Trump wrote.

The House resolution passed with bipartisan support, despite the 58 Democrats who opposed it.

But the damage was done. Instead of unity, Americans witnessed yet another moment where partisan hatred trumped basic decency.

As one Capitol Hill staffer put it: “Charlie Kirk was murdered. That should be the headline. Not AOC’s moral superiority complex.”
