Russian President Vladimir Putin has turned the murder of conservative activist Charlie Kirk into his latest propaganda weapon, praising the 30-year-old as a “hero” and warning that America is “devouring itself from within.”

The Kremlin strongman spoke at a televised foreign policy forum in Sochi, using Kirk’s killing as evidence that “Western liberalism has lost its soul.” His remarks — part eulogy, part political jab — came just weeks after Kirk was gunned down during a Turning Point USA event in Utah.

“Charlie Kirk was a brave man who stood for traditional values,” Putin declared. “He was murdered because those values are no longer tolerated in the United States.”

Putin’s Political Spin

Putin’s fiery speech linked Kirk’s murder to what he called America’s “spiritual and cultural decay.” He portrayed the U.S. as a nation divided by ideology and incapable of unity — a message that played well for his domestic audience but drew outrage from Western observers.

“He fought for conservative beliefs in his country, just as some of our people have fought for theirs,” Putin said, comparing Kirk to Michael Gloss, an American-born son of a former CIA officer who defected to Russia and was killed fighting alongside Russian troops in Ukraine last year.

Putin claimed both men “died defending moral order,” adding, “The United States is splitting apart under the weight of its contradictions.”

The Killing That Shocked the Conservative Movement

Kirk’s death on September 10 stunned the American right. The outspoken Turning Point USA founder was fatally shot while attending an event at Utah Valley University.

Police quickly arrested 22-year-old Tyler Robinson, who now faces charges of aggravated murder, obstruction of justice, and witness tampering. According to court documents, Robinson allegedly told his partner he acted because he “had enough of (Kirk’s) hatred.”

Investigators noted Robinson’s political views had shifted sharply to the left in recent months. His mother told police he had become “more pro-gay and trans-oriented” and “increasingly angry about conservative rhetoric.”

“This wasn’t just a crime — it was an assassination of values,” said Utah State Senator Craig Harper, a Republican ally of Kirk. “It shows how toxic political culture has become.”

A Calculated Message From Moscow

Putin’s embrace of Kirk is the latest in a series of overtures toward American conservatives, part of a broader Russian strategy to present itself as the defender of traditional Western morality.

“Kirk was a hero who paid the ultimate price for promoting the same conservative ideals that Russia upholds,” Putin told the Sochi audience. He also revealed that Michael Gloss was posthumously awarded a medal — allegedly handed to Trump envoy and real estate tycoon Steve Witkoff during his recent Moscow visit.

The CIA declined to discuss Gloss’s case, calling his death “a private family matter” but adding, “The entire CIA family mourns this loss.”

Putin Praises Trump, Warns the West

Beyond his tribute to Kirk, Putin praised President Donald Trump for taking what he described as “a practical and courageous approach” to Russia-Ukraine negotiations.

Their private August summit in Alaska, Putin said, had been “productive and cordial.” He added, “We respect that President Trump seeks peace, not escalation.”

At the same time, the Russian leader threatened “serious consequences” if Western nations continued targeting Russian energy shipments. He condemned France’s recent seizure of a suspected “shadow fleet” tanker as “piracy that could destabilize oil markets.”

Putin also dismissed reports that Russian drones had violated Danish airspace as “NATO provocations designed to scare taxpayers into funding more weapons.”

A Death Turned Into a Political Weapon

For Putin, Kirk’s death was less about tragedy and more about messaging. By eulogizing the conservative firebrand as a martyr of values, he found another opportunity to contrast Russia’s authoritarian moralism with what he paints as America’s moral anarchy.

“America is tearing itself apart,” he warned in closing. “We must ensure Russia does not follow the same path.”

Political analysts say the comments fit a familiar Kremlin pattern — using Western chaos to polish Moscow’s image.

“Putin sees every American tragedy as a propaganda opportunity,” said Dr. Elena Kovalchuk, a Moscow-based political analyst. “By sanctifying Charlie Kirk, he’s really trying to recruit American conservatives into his global culture war.”
