An Alabama man is fighting for his life — and may lose multiple limbs — after being viciously attacked by seven dogs while walking to his mailbox.
Jamie Boyd, 81, was mauled on September 24 in Bibb County by a pack of dogs allegedly owned by his neighbors, William and Lacey Mitchell. According to local outlet WBRC, Boyd’s wife tried to help during the terrifying attack, but she fell to the ground while using her walker.
Police rushed to the scene, and Brent Police Chief Carl McMillan said he fired at one of the dogs to protect Mrs. Boyd. “I don’t know if I hit him or not. He didn’t holler out, but they took off running,” McMillan recalled.
The Mitchells, ages 53 and 50, have since been indicted by a Bibb County grand jury under Alabama’s Emily’s Law — which holds dog owners accountable when their animals cause serious harm. Both face one count of control of dangerous dogs.
According to the lawsuit, Boyd’s injuries were catastrophic. His scalp was torn from his head, and he lost half of the muscle tissue in his body. He remains in critical condition in the intensive care unit at UAB Hospital.
“He’s facing amputation of his arm and possibly his leg to stop a raging infection,” Boyd’s attorney, Paul Patterson, told WBRC. “The family is asking for prayers from everyone in the community.”
Patterson said the animals involved were a mix of pit bulls and pit bull breeds, and court documents show that the Mitchells allegedly knew the dogs were dangerous. They have pleaded not guilty and waived their arraignment.
“This is one of the most tragic dog mauling attacks I’ve ever handled,” Patterson said, calling the incident a “brutal mauling.” He also urged lawmakers to strengthen Emily’s Law, arguing that penalties should be tougher for owners who show “reckless disregard for the safety of others.”
All seven dogs have since been impounded at the Bibb County Animal Facility. The Mitchells were released from jail on $5,000 bond each, and their arraignment is scheduled for early December.
