Two Minnesota teens are dead and several others injured after a heartbreaking head-on car crash early Saturday morning in Chisago City, Minnesota.
Police say the collision happened just before 2 a.m. on October 25 at the intersection of Stacy Trail and Ivywood Trail. A 2014 Toyota Camry, driven by a 14-year-old boy and carrying two 15-year-old passengers, slammed into a 2000 Toyota 4-Runner driven by a 17-year-old with an 18-year-old passenger.
Tragically, one of the 15-year-olds in the Camry died at the scene. The two other teens in the car were rushed to Regions Hospital with serious injuries — one of them airlifted for emergency care. The 17-year-old driver of the 4-Runner also died from his injuries hours later. The 18-year-old passenger was taken to another hospital, though police haven’t shared details about his condition.
The Chisago Lakes Hockey Association identified one of the victims as 15-year-old Jax Affolter, calling him “a much loved son, brother, friend and teammate.” The organization said in a statement, “Today, we as a hockey family mourn the loss of Jax, and stand committed to supporting his family.” His younger brother is part of the Wildcat Mite hockey program.
A Meal Train fundraiser for Jax’s family has already raised more than $10,000 in just a few days as the community rallies to help.
Friends of the 17-year-old driver are also mourning the loss. Western Romero, who had known him since childhood, told reporters that the tragedy has left everyone in disbelief. “It hasn’t hit me,” he said. “I don’t think it’s hit anyone that we’re not going to see him again.”
The mother of the second 15-year-old passenger shared that her son had been celebrating his 15th birthday the night of the crash. He suffered multiple serious injuries, including two broken legs, according to a GoFundMe created to help with medical costs.
Memorials have been set up at the crash site to honor the two teens who lost their lives.
Police say alcohol was found at the scene and may have been a factor in the crash, but the investigation remains ongoing.
