A teenager has died and six others were badly injured following a devastating three-vehicle crash in Melbourne, Australia on Thursday night.

The crash happened around 9:15 p.m. on Hopkins Road in Truganina, about 22 kilometers west of Melbourne’s CBD. A blue Honda CR-V carrying five teenage boys is believed to have collided with two other vehicles after the driver misjudged the distance while attempting to overtake another car.

A 17-year-old passenger from Kurunjang died at the scene. Three other teenage passengers were rushed to the hospital with serious injuries. The driver of the Honda, an 18-year-old P-plater from Williams Landing, was taken to the hospital with minor injuries.

The second vehicle involved was driven by a 23-year-old man from Tarneit, who also sustained minor injuries and was transported to the hospital.

In the third vehicle, a red sedan, were two 18-year-old women. Marina Ivanovska was driving with her cousin when the Honda collided head-on with their car. She later described how the Honda rolled over and landed in a ditch just meters from where it struck her vehicle. The front of her car was badly damaged in the crash, and both she and her cousin were taken to the hospital with minor injuries.

Victoria Police Assistant Commissioner Glenn Weir said the P-plater driver was carrying more passengers than legally allowed. He added that the driver appeared to be speeding while overtaking and misjudged the maneuver.

“It appears as though the car was overtaking another car and misjudged that while speeding, and as a result of that decision a young person has lost their life,” Weir said. “It just shows the fragility of human life and how one act, which might not seem extreme, can have catastrophic consequences.”

No arrests or charges have been made at this stage. Victoria Police said the investigation into the crash is ongoing.
