A 17-year-old girl had a terrifying encounter in Swindon, Wiltshire, UK when an attempted kidnap unfolded right before the eyes of heroic bystanders. The teenager had just finished a shift at a theater and was walking alone when 28-year-old Abdulmawal Ibrahim Adam began following her.

Adam, a Sudanese national living in Swindon, tried to strike up a conversation with the girl, but his attention quickly turned aggressive as she desperately tried to flag down passing cars for help. Terrifying footage shows Adam grabbing the frightened teen and attempting to drag her across the road as she struggled to break free.

Luckily, passengers waiting at a nearby bus stop saw the attack and rushed to her rescue, chasing Adam away before the situation could escalate further. Adam later tried to follow another woman, but she managed to escape.

In court, it was revealed that Adam’s predatory behavior targeted multiple women that day. He was sentenced to four years and one month in prison and will serve an extended license period totaling seven years.

The victim described the attack as a life-changing experience. “It was like I wasn’t even aware that bad things could happen in the world,” she told Swindon Crown Court. “I never would have believed this had happened to me, and I never fully connected with when women say they don’t feel safe walking at night. But I understand now.”

Prosecutor George Threlfall told the court that witnesses on the bus heard her screams and saw Adam dragging her. “The victim was screaming continuously and loudly while trying to break free, but Adam had a tight grip and wouldn’t let go,” he said. Two bus passengers immediately jumped off to intervene, forcing Adam to flee. Another member of the public went to check on the victim and then followed Adam, helping police later identify him through footage captured on a mobile phone.

Judge Taylor praised the quick-thinking bystanders, saying their actions prevented the attack from becoming far worse. “Her fear and the fear of witnesses ranged from torture to rape,” he said. “This would have been even more terrifying if it were not for the willingness of strangers to step in and protect her. I commend them.”

The victim added a powerful statement after the sentencing: “I hope you get locked up because I know if you were out in the world, I wouldn’t feel safe. The world gets a little safer with every person locked away. Young girls, women, sisters, best friends, girlfriends, daughters—they will be just a little bit safer with you behind bars.”

The individuals who intervened—the woman who filmed Adam and the man who jumped off the bus—were honored with the High Sheriff Award, receiving $600 each for their bravery. Investigating officer DC Anna McCormack also praised both the victim and the public for their courage, noting that Adam’s predatory behavior toward multiple women was completely unacceptable and could have ended far worse without their intervention.
