A tragic crash in Utah left one person dead and 18 others injured after a pickup truck collided with two school buses on Friday evening.
The accident occurred around 8:30 p.m. local time on U.S. Route 89 near Ephraim, Utah, according to the Utah Highway Patrol (UHP). Officials say the southbound pickup truck veered left of center and first grazed a northbound school bus before striking a second bus head-on.
The first bus, carrying roughly 19 students, thankfully reported no injuries. The second bus, which had 17 students and a driver on board, sustained multiple injuries. All 18 passengers were rushed to nearby hospitals, with two in critical condition who were airlifted for further treatment.
The driver of the pickup truck, a 43-year-old man, died at the scene. Authorities say fatigue is being considered a possible factor in the crash.
Both buses were operated by Wasatch Academy, a college-preparatory boarding school in Mt. Pleasant, Utah. The school confirmed the crash involved two of its buses but emphasized that no students or staff members lost their lives. “Several members of the school community were injured and are receiving medical care. Families have been notified. One fatality has been reported in the other vehicle, and we extend our sincere condolences to those affected,” the school said.
In response, Wasatch Academy has activated trauma support services for students, adjusted academic schedules, and emphasized the well-being and safety of its community. KUTV reported that as of Saturday morning, two students and one staff member remained hospitalized.
The city of Mount Pleasant also released a statement, offering condolences to the Wasatch Academy community. “We are holding everyone involved close in our hearts and wishing for comfort, strength, and healing during this difficult time. Our community stands with you and all involved,” the statement said.
The investigation into the cause of the crash is ongoing, and authorities continue to work to ensure safety on the stretch of highway where the tragedy occurred.
