At least nine people have been killed and 10 others injured in a mass shooting at a bar in South Africa early on Sunday, Dec. 21.
Just before 1 a.m. local time, gunmen in two vehicles began firing “randomly” at patrons outside KwaNoxolo Tavern in the Tambo section of Bekkersdal, Johannesburg, according to the South African Police Service (SAPS). The attackers reportedly fled the scene in a white Kombi van and a silver sedan.
The police confirmed the tragic death toll, stating that nine people were killed, including five inside the tavern, three outside, and one pedestrian. Ten more victims were rushed to the hospital with injuries.
SAPS spokesperson Brigadier Athlenda said that around 12 unidentified suspects were involved, and the police have launched a full investigation into the attack. Forensic teams and Crime Intelligence units have been mobilized to piece together what happened. “The motive for the shooting will be determined by investigation,” SAPS said in a statement.
The attack is described as “unprovoked,” with the gunmen reportedly using pistols and at least one AK-47, according to Maj-Gen Fred Kekana, the deputy provincial police commissioner. “The poor patrons were just enjoying themselves when people came and shot,” he said. One of the victims was a taxi driver who had just dropped off a passenger at the scene.
The incident occurred in a gold mining area about 25 miles southwest of Johannesburg. As of now, the shooters remain at large.
This shooting comes just weeks after another deadly attack in South Africa. On Dec. 6, three gunmen opened fire at a hostel bar, killing 12 people, including minors. The earlier attack also involved random shootings at unsuspecting patrons.
The SAPS is urging anyone with information about the Dec. 21 shooting to contact Crime Stop at 08600 10111 or submit tips via the MySAPS app.
