A horrific late-night attack has left an entire community in mourning after nine people — including five children — were brutally killed in Suriname, authorities confirmed.
Police said a man attacked a group of people with a sharp object at a residence in Richelieu, a town in the Commewijne district of the South American country. The suspect, whose identity has not been released, allegedly killed four adults and five children during the rampage, which unfolded late Saturday night, Dec. 27, and into the early hours of Sunday, Dec. 28.
Officials said a sixth child and another adult were also seriously injured in the attack. Both victims were transported by ambulance to the Academic Hospital Paramaribo in the capital city of Paramaribo, where they were admitted for emergency treatment.
When police from the Eastern Region responded to the scene, the suspect allegedly attempted to attack officers. Authorities said police opened fire during the arrest, striking the man in both legs. He was taken to a hospital, where he remains under medical supervision.
“Further details regarding the true circumstances of this tragic attack will follow,” police said in a statement as the investigation continues.
Local media outlets reported that neighbors claimed the suspect had struggled with mental health issues prior to the violence, according to the Daily Mail. Officials have not confirmed those claims.
The killings sent shockwaves across the nation, prompting a public response from Suriname’s president, Jennifer Geerlings-Simons.
“I am shocked by the violent incident in Commewijne,” she wrote in a Facebook statement. “In a time when family and friends should hold and support each other, we are faced with the harsh reality that the world also knows another side. A father who takes the lives of his own children and at the same time kills his neighbors.”
She concluded by offering condolences to the victims’ families, calling the tragedy “unimaginably difficult.”
Authorities said the investigation remains ongoing as the country grapples with one of the deadliest violent incidents in its recent history.
