At least seven people have been killed and dozens more injured after a suicide bomber detonated explosives during a wedding celebration in northwestern Pakistan, turning a night of joy into devastation.

The attack took place Friday, Jan. 23, during a wedding ceremony in Dera Ismail Khan, located in Pakistan’s volatile Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, according to reports from ABC News, Reuters, and Al Jazeera citing local police.

Witnesses said guests were dancing to drum beats when the attacker, wearing an explosive vest, detonated himself inside the gathering. Three people were initially confirmed dead at the scene, but the toll rose sharply as critically injured victims were rushed to hospital.

By Saturday, Jan. 24, four more people had died from their injuries, bringing the total number of fatalities to seven, according to Reuters and Al Jazeera. More than 20 people were wounded in the blast, with several still receiving treatment for serious injuries.

Adnan Khan, a local police chief, said officers immediately transported both the injured and deceased to nearby hospitals following the explosion. Emergency responders described chaotic scenes as survivors searched for loved ones amid debris and destruction.

The wedding was being held at the home of Noor Alam Mehsud, a pro-government community leader, according to the outlets. The building is known to house members of local peace committees — groups made up of residents and elders who are supported by the Pakistani government as part of its efforts to counter militant activity in regions near the Afghan border.

No group has officially claimed responsibility for the bombing. However, suspicion is expected to fall on the Pakistani Taliban, also known as Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan, according to Al Jazeera and ABC News.

The group operates on both sides of the Pakistan-Afghanistan border and has previously labeled peace committee members as traitors. The United Nations Security Council has linked the TTP to multiple suicide bombings and attacks across the region.

The deadly Jan. 23 attack comes as Pakistan’s military prepares for expanded operations against armed groups along the border with Afghanistan. According to Al Jazeera, tens of thousands of civilians have already been displaced as security forces ramp up preparations.

As investigations continue, authorities say they are working to identify the attacker and determine whether the wedding was specifically targeted — while families mourn lives lost in an attack that shattered a celebration meant to mark a new beginning.
