A chilling piece of video shown in court has revealed the final moments before a skydiving jump turned into a deadly nightmare.
Alex Welling, 32, is seen smiling, sticking out his tongue, and clearly excited as he and his instructor, 37-year-old Stephen Hoare, prepare to leap from a plane over Australia. But what was supposed to be a routine jump quickly spiraled into disaster.
As the pair moved to exit the aircraft, a black strap suddenly caught on a metal step near the door. Instead of dropping cleanly, they became stuck—dangling upside down outside the plane in midair.
What followed was a desperate and ultimately futile attempt to save them.
The pilot reportedly tried multiple maneuvers to shake them loose, even flying low over the airport while people on the ground climbed onto a vehicle in a last-ditch effort to reach them. But nothing worked.
Moments later, the connection failed—and both men plunged to their deaths.
The tragedy happened on June 27, 2021, at Goulburn airport in New South Wales, but the disturbing footage resurfaced this week during a major court case.
A court found the skydiving company and its director, Attilio “John” Ferrara, guilty of serious safety breaches tied to the incident. Prosecutors argued the fatal accident was caused by equipment getting snagged on a recently installed metal step on the plane.
During the trial, jurors heard that the modification created a dangerous hazard—one that ultimately proved deadly.
The video was shown in court despite objections from the victims’ families, with the judge ruling it could help prevent similar tragedies in the future.

Ferrara was not present when the verdict was delivered. He is expected to be sentenced at a later date.
