Funeral Director Crushed to Death by Hoist Used to Move Bodies in Horrifying Workplace Accident

A tragic workplace accident has left a community shaken after a funeral director was killed in a horrifying incident involving heavy equipment.

Sally Blundell, 58, was working alone at a funeral home in Swaffham, Norfolk, on December 1, 2023, when a machine used to move bodies reportedly malfunctioned and crushed her.

According to officials, the hydraulic lift—used to transport coffins from refrigeration units—came down on her chest, leaving her fatally injured.

The disturbing discovery was made after a grieving family arrived for an appointment and found no staff on site. After waiting and calling the branch, another employee was sent to check on the building.

When he arrived, he found Blundell unresponsive and immediately called emergency services.

Investigators later revealed that the machine involved weighed more than 400 pounds and had a mechanical issue. Reports indicate a faulty return spring may have prevented the control handle from properly shutting off, allowing the lift to continue moving.

Even more troubling, the design of the equipment meant it could be accidentally triggered if knocked in certain positions.

Despite the serious flaw, the lift had reportedly passed inspection just two months earlier.

Officials also confirmed Blundell had previously raised concerns about working alone, a detail that has now come under scrutiny as the investigation continues.

Her daughter described her as well respected and deeply connected in her community, with a wide circle of friends and colleagues.
