A terrifying plane crash turned a quiet airport into a scene of chaos after a small aircraft slammed into a hangar and burst into flames, leaving multiple people dead and others badly hurt.

Authorities say at least two people—a pilot and a passenger—were killed when a Diamond DA41 Twin Star crashed into a building at Parafield Airport on Wednesday afternoon.

The aircraft reportedly plowed straight into a hangar packed with people, triggering a massive fire and sending thick black smoke billowing into the sky—visible from miles away.

Emergency crews rushed to the scene around 2:10 p.m. local time, where they found widespread destruction and injured workers. Reports say around 11 people inside the hangar were hurt, many suffering serious burns. Several were rushed to nearby hospitals for treatment.

The full extent of the damage is still unclear, and officials say the number of casualties could rise as they work to determine how many people were inside both the plane and the building at the time of the crash.

Witnesses described a sudden, horrifying moment.

One man driving near the airport said he saw the plane struggling in the air before it sharply nosedived.

“You could hear it struggling, then it just went straight down,” he said. “It all happened so fast.”

Within minutes, the area was engulfed in thick smoke, turning the sky dark as flames tore through the hangar.

The airport sits near residential neighborhoods, prompting officials to warn nearby residents to stay indoors and avoid breathing in the smoke. Anyone experiencing breathing issues was urged to seek medical help.

Some of the people inside the building—including student pilots—were able to escape as emergency crews worked to contain the fire.

Investigators with the Australian Transport Safety Bureau have launched a full investigation into what caused the crash. A team of specialists is being sent to examine the wreckage, review maintenance records, and analyze all factors that may have led to the deadly incident.
