A quiet early morning at one of America’s most exclusive fitness clubs turned into a scene straight out of a nightmare after a car came barreling into the building — sparking a deadly fire and a disturbing discovery that has authorities on edge.
Police in Portland, Oregon say one person is dead after a vehicle slammed into the historic Multnomah Athletic Club just before 3 a.m. Saturday — and what they found inside the wreckage is raising serious questions.
When first responders rushed to the scene, flames were already tearing through part of the upscale facility, known for its decades-long legacy and thousands of members. After firefighters finally got the blaze under control, they made a grim discovery — a body inside the burned-out vehicle.
But the shock didn’t stop there.
Investigators say the car wasn’t just involved in a crash. Inside, authorities uncovered explosive materials — including propane tanks — some of which had already detonated during the chaos.
“This appears to be an isolated event,” Portland Police Chief Bob Day said, though officials have been tight-lipped about what may have led up to the fiery incident.
Members of the Metro Explosive Disposal Unit were quickly called in to secure the scene, with officials confirming the explosive devices were likely brought in with the vehicle itself — a detail that has only deepened the mystery.
Despite the terrifying nature of the crash, there was one stroke of luck: the club was closed at the time. According to a spokesperson, no staff or members were inside, and no additional injuries were reported.
Still, the eerie combination of a high-speed crash, a deadly fire, and explosive materials has left the community shaken — and searching for answers.
As investigators continue piecing together what happened in those early morning hours, one thing is clear: this was no ordinary accident.
