What started as a viral Spring Break moment ended in heartbreak after a 22-year-old Texas man died from injuries he suffered in a crash that was partially captured on video.

Michael Brown, 22, of Nixon, Texas, died last Friday morning from a serious head injury following the March 14 wreck in Port Aransas. Brown had been riding in the passenger seat of a 2012 Jeep Wrangler when the vehicle crashed into a Tesla on State Highway 361.

The story drew major attention after video shared on social media appeared to show a shirtless man climbing up through the Jeep’s roof and twerking on top of the moving vehicle just moments before the violent crash. The footage quickly spread online, turning a reckless party scene into something far darker.

After the impact, video showed the Jeep badly damaged as emergency crews rushed to help an injured person lying in the road. Several young people in swimsuits were also seen standing near the wreckage as the chaos unfolded.

Authorities say the driver, 24-year-old Riley Rhoades, was later arrested after allegedly blowing blood alcohol levels of .14 and .12 during breath tests, both well above Texas’ legal limit of .08. He has been charged with intoxication assault and is being held in the Nueces County Jail on a $10,000 bond.

Now, as Brown’s loved ones grieve, friends and family are remembering him as someone full of life. One tribute described him as “truly special,” while others said his energy was unforgettable and that he loved to have fun and make people laugh. Another family member said he was not only a great cousin, but also an amazing son, brother, and friend.

An online fundraiser was also launched to help cover funeral expenses, as those close to him try to process a loss that happened so suddenly.

The tragedy has also put a spotlight on growing concerns around Spring Break behavior in Port Aransas. City officials say they prepare every year for large crowds, but many of the biggest safety problems come from visitors who arrive ready to party without thinking about the risks.

Port Aransas Mayor Wendy Moore said officials work hard to keep both residents and tourists safe, while urging people to be more aware of their surroundings and take personal responsibility during the busy season.

Police say enforcement has already been stepped up this year, with additional help brought in from other agencies. So far this Spring Break season, authorities have reportedly made 15 arrests related to drinking and driving.

Local law enforcement made it clear they do not want reckless or dangerous behavior taking over the beach town. Their message is simple: come to enjoy yourself, but do not turn the trip into a tragedy.
