A Texas mother is on the run after investigators say she left her two young daughters to fend for themselves for more than a month, creating a situation authorities are calling deeply alarming.

According to the Harris County Sheriff’s Office, 34-year-old Rayshawna Deanna Dowdell is now wanted on a charge of abandoning a child without intent to return.

The case first came to light on March 30, when a concerned woman called authorities after encountering two young girls alone at a neighborhood park. The woman later told deputies the children revealed they had been living by themselves for an extended period.

Investigators say those claims turned out to be true.

Authorities determined the girls — ages 11 and 6 — had been left alone at their home in Katy, a suburb outside Houston, from February 17 through March 30. That’s roughly six weeks with no adult physically present.

During interviews, the 11-year-old described taking on the role of caregiver for her younger sister. According to court documents, she handled everything from getting her ready for school to trying to find food for both of them.

Officials say the situation inside the home reflected that reality.

Deputies described the residence as cluttered, dirty, and largely without food. The only meals the girls reportedly received came when their mother ordered delivery for them remotely.

Despite being gone, investigators say Dowdell remained in contact with her daughters through their devices. Authorities allege she gave instructions from afar — telling them when to go to school, when to leave the house, and how to manage daily life — but never returned in person.

The 11-year-old repeatedly told investigators there was no adult present during the entire six-week period, and officials say they found no evidence to suggest otherwise.

Dowdell later told authorities she had left the state to attend a funeral, but prosecutors say her explanations about the children’s whereabouts quickly became inconsistent.

After the initial report, the girls were placed with a relative. But that arrangement reportedly fell apart after an alleged physical altercation between Dowdell and the family member. Authorities say she then took the children and disappeared again.

Investigators launched multiple searches, conducting welfare checks at several locations tied to the family. Each attempt came up empty, with officials alleging the mother provided misleading or conflicting information.

At one point, authorities say Dowdell tried to leave the state with the children. Law enforcement coordinated with airport officials after spotting her name on a flight manifest, but before they could intervene, she was tipped off and fled.

The search finally ended when the girls were located in Ohio during a welfare check. They are now safe, but Dowdell remains at large.
