A terrifying scene unfolded in Germany on Monday evening when an SUV barreled into a crowd in the heart of a bustling city, leaving two people dead and more than 20 others injured.
The shocking incident happened around 5 p.m. in Leipzig, a major city known for its busy pedestrian shopping streets and historic landmarks. Authorities say a 33-year-old German man was behind the wheel and has since been arrested.
Witnesses described pure chaos.
A silver Volkswagen SUV was seen speeding down a crowded street, sending people scrambling in every direction. Photos from the scene show a heavily damaged vehicle, emergency crews rushing in, and victims lying on the ground as first responders fought to save lives.
One local resident, who narrowly avoided being hit, said he immediately ran toward the scene to help.
“The car braked, it stopped. There was a woman on top and she ended up under the car,” he said, describing the horrifying aftermath. “People realized quickly something was wrong and started running.”
Officials later confirmed two people—a 63-year-old woman and a 77-year-old man—were killed in what the city called a “mass casualty event.” Several others were seriously injured.
Police say the suspect stopped the vehicle on his own before being taken into custody. Authorities have stressed there is no ongoing threat to the public.
As investigators work to determine what led to the attack, early indications suggest the driver may have been dealing with mental health issues. Officials have used the term “rampage” to describe the incident but say it’s too early to confirm a motive. At this point, there is no evidence linking the crash to terrorism or any political cause.
Local leaders expressed shock and grief.
“We are mourning two deaths and many injuries,” said Leipzig’s mayor, calling it a “terrible tragedy.” “It’s impossible to find the right words for something like this.”
Emergency crews, including helicopters and dozens of responders, flooded the area as police locked down parts of the city center. The scene remained active for hours as authorities continued their investigation.
This latest incident adds to growing concerns across Europe, where several similar vehicle attacks have occurred in recent years—some linked to extremism, others to individuals in crisis.
