A chilling discovery in South Africa has turned a missing person case into something far more disturbing.
Authorities believe 59-year-old Gabriel Batista was killed and eaten by a massive crocodile after human remains were found inside the animal’s stomach.
Batista had been missing for days after trying to drive across the Komati River during dangerous flood conditions. His vehicle became stuck, and investigators believe he was swept away by the powerful current.
The search took a grim turn when police spotted a 15-foot Nile crocodile behaving strangely. The reptile was seen lying on a small island with a noticeably swollen belly — and it didn’t react to the noise of drones or a helicopter flying overhead.
That raised red flags.
In a dramatic operation, the crocodile was shot from the air and airlifted out of the river. What officials found next was horrifying.

Inside the animal, investigators discovered human remains, including severed arms, parts of a rib cage, and pieces of flesh. A ring was also recovered — one that is believed to belong to Batista.
Authorities say there was enough evidence to strongly suggest the crocodile had consumed the missing man, but DNA testing is still underway to officially confirm it.
Investigators are still trying to determine exactly what happened in Batista’s final moments. It’s unclear whether he had already drowned in the floodwaters before the attack, or if the crocodile struck while he was still alive.
The case took another unsettling turn when multiple shoes were found inside the crocodile. Officials say that doesn’t necessarily mean there were other victims, noting that crocodiles will swallow just about anything they come across.
Batista was a well-known figure in the area, owning a local inn and sports bar and frequently traveling between Johannesburg and his business. Friends described him as a kind, family-oriented man, and his sudden disappearance has left loved ones devastated.
His family has been closely following the investigation but is waiting for DNA results before speaking publicly.
The Komati River is known for its large population of Nile crocodiles — one of the most dangerous predators in Africa, capable of growing up to 20 feet long and responsible for hundreds of human deaths each year.
