A terrifying carjacking outside an Oregon airport turned into a nightmare when a man was dragged from a moving SUV and thrown onto the pavement, leaving him critically injured.
The violent incident unfolded Monday at Portland International Airport when a man was picking up passengers outside the terminal, according to local reports.
Authorities say the victim was loading luggage into his Nissan Rogue when 52-year-old Vidal Pedraza suddenly jumped into the vehicle and sped away.
But there was still someone inside.
Mark Campbell, who had reportedly been sitting in the back seat, was dragged as the SUV tore away from the curb before eventually being thrown from the vehicle.
Witnesses described the horrifying scene as Campbell rolled across the pavement while the suspect drove recklessly through the airport area.
“I just thought he was dead,” family friend Helena Wolfe told reporters.
“Mark rolled until he was lying there, facedown and not moving.”
According to investigators, Campbell was dragged roughly 30 yards before he was violently thrown from the SUV after Pedraza allegedly swerved and slammed into a curb.
Surveillance footage reportedly captured the exact moment Campbell fell from the vehicle.
Wolfe called the entire ordeal surreal.
“I’m seeing this car drive off, my car drive off,” she said.
Campbell was rushed to the intensive care unit with devastating injuries that reportedly include five broken ribs, head trauma, a concussion, and memory loss.
Meanwhile, police tracked the stolen SUV to a nearby Dutch Bros parking lot, where witnesses claimed Pedraza allegedly tried to get into another person’s van after abandoning the vehicle.
Authorities later arrested the suspect.
According to reports, Pedraza allegedly told investigators he had not slept in five days and needed a vehicle so he could drive back to Los Angeles.
During a court appearance Tuesday, prosecutors hit Pedraza with a long list of serious charges, including robbery, assault, theft, reckless driving, possession of a stolen vehicle, unauthorized use of a vehicle, criminal mischief, and reckless endangerment.
Nathan Vasquez said prosecutors are taking an aggressive approach because of the extreme violence involved in the case.
Authorities continue investigating the shocking airport attack as Campbell fights to recover from his injuries.
