Prom night was supposed to be one of the happiest nights of the year for a Tennessee high school senior. Instead, it ended in heartbreak after gunfire exploded during a pre-prom gathering, leaving one teen dead and four others wounded.

Seventeen-year-old Saturah Hayes was killed Friday night in Brownsville, Tennessee — a small town about an hour outside Memphis — after shots rang out at a local park where Haywood High School students had gathered to snap prom photos before heading to the dance.

Friends and classmates dressed in tuxedos and colorful gowns were celebrating what should have been a once-in-a-lifetime night when chaos suddenly erupted.

Police said four other people were also shot and rushed to nearby hospitals. Authorities have not confirmed whether all of the victims were students.

The tragedy sent shockwaves through the tight-knit community and forced school officials to end the prom early. Haywood High School was also closed Monday as grieving students and staff tried to process the devastating loss.

School superintendent Amie Marsh remembered Hayes as a bright young woman with a future full of promise.

“She was a hard-working student with a positive attitude,” Marsh said in a statement. “She was full of potential and promise with hopes and plans for the future that will now remain unrealized.”

Marsh called the shooting a “senseless tragedy” that has forever changed the lives of everyone involved.

“We must also continue to uplift the students and families who were injured last night,” she added. “Their only goal was celebration of their children and now they must navigate the road to recovery.”

On Sunday, hundreds of mourners lined the streets of Brownsville as Hayes’ casket was driven through downtown in an emotional tribute that left many residents in tears.

Brownsville Mayor William “Bill” Rawls said the entire town has been shaken by the violence.

“We shouldn’t be here today doing this,” Rawls said. “It’s just senseless … it’s uncalled for … but we want to support the family in any way we can during this time of need.”

The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation is now working alongside local authorities to track down whoever opened fire. As of Monday, no arrests had been made, and investigators are asking the public for help identifying the shooter or shooters.

Haywood County Sheriff Billy Garrett Jr. vowed that authorities would use every available resource to bring justice to Hayes’ family.

“Our county is a great place to live and is a strong, close-knit community, especially in times like these,” Garrett said.

For many in Brownsville, the tragedy reopened painful memories from just three years ago when another Haywood High School student, 4.0 student and class president Christine Michael, was shot and killed while driving home from a basketball game.

Now, another young life has been cut short far too soon — this time on what should have been one of the most unforgettable nights of her life.

  1. Probably kids and if they find them arrest the parents of this trash too. So sick of people having kids they have no intention of raising and let them run the streets. You don’t get to raise animals and then turn them loose to destroy other families.
