A 17-year-old Illinois driver is facing criminal charges after prosecutors say he was speeding at more than 100 mph before crashing into a married couple and killing them both.
Authorities say the deadly collision happened on March 27 at the intersection of Highland Avenue and 35th Street in Downers Grove, Illinois.
The victims were identified as 72-year-old Ried Jacobsen and his wife, 67-year-old Katherine Jacobsen.
According to prosecutors, teenager Francesco Rendina was driving at an extremely dangerous speed moments before the crash.
Investigators allege Rendina was traveling 104 mph in a 45 mph zone just seconds before impact.
Officials say he slammed into the Jacobsens’ vehicle at approximately 89 mph while recklessly changing lanes.
The violent crash killed Ried Jacobsen at the scene.
Katherine Jacobsen was rushed to a nearby hospital but later died from her injuries.
On May 11, Rendina appeared in court and was officially charged as an adult with two counts of reckless homicide.
Despite the serious charges, the teen has since been released from jail under several restrictions.
Court records show Rendina is banned from driving and is not allowed to consume alcohol or controlled substances unless medically prescribed.
He is scheduled to return to court on June 15.
According to the couple’s obituary, Ried and Katherine Jacobsen had been married since 1987 and are survived by their two children, Eric and Karen.
DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert Berlin blasted the teen’s alleged behavior in a statement following the charges.
“Mr. Rendina’s alleged reckless driving on a busy road that resulted in a horrific crash and the loss of two lives demonstrates his complete disregard for public safety,” Berlin said.
Downers Grove Police Chief Michael DeVries also called the tragedy a devastating reminder about the dangers of excessive speeding.
“This tragedy has had a profound impact on everyone involved,” DeVries said.
“Our thoughts are with the victims’ loved ones as they continue to cope with this tremendous loss.”
The investigation into the deadly crash remains ongoing.
