A Washington state man is facing serious charges after police say he intentionally ran over two teenagers outside a Taco Bell after watching them cause trouble in the parking lot.
The chaotic incident happened May 12 at a Taco Bell in Vancouver, Washington, where police say Charles Thorsen became angry after seeing two teens allegedly harassing people and acting recklessly outside the restaurant.
According to court documents cited by KOIN, Thorsen was inside the Taco Bell when he reportedly told employees, “I’m going to run them over.”
When workers appeared to think he was joking, Thorsen allegedly made it clear he was serious.
Police say he then got into his Kia and struck the two teens as they were riding an e-bike through the parking lot.
The impact allegedly threw both juveniles from the bike. One of the teens was seriously injured and suffered a compound leg fracture after Thorsen allegedly hit the e-bike and then drove over the victim.
Police and paramedics rushed to the scene after the crash.
According to the Vancouver Police Department, investigators later determined that Thorsen intentionally hit the bike with his vehicle.
He allegedly told police he had planned to “knock some sense into the children.”
Thorsen was arrested on suspicion of vehicular assault.
Police also said one of the teens is facing charges connected to what had allegedly been happening in the parking lot before the crash.
According to officials, the teens had reportedly been riding recklessly through the lot, harassing people, damaging property, and blocking a vehicle from leaving the area.
One nearby business manager, Maddison Barnhart, told KOIN the teens were known for causing problems in the area.
“They’re always in the middle of the road doing wheelies,” she said. “Just all sorts of dumb stuff. And I figured it would happen at one point.”
The case took another strange turn days later when police went to the home of the teen facing charges to perform a welfare check because he had reportedly been absent from school for nearly two weeks.
When officers tried to arrest him in connection with the Taco Bell incident, his mother allegedly sprayed an officer with a hose and was charged with third-degree assault.
The investigation remains ongoing, but police say the parking lot chaos crossed a dangerous line when Thorsen allegedly decided to take matters into his own hands.
