A sports journalist in Mexico was carjacked at gunpoint in the middle of a live broadcast, turning an ordinary interview into a terrifying scene viewers watched unfold in real time.

Fernando Vargas was sitting in his car at a gas station in Cuernavaca, Mexico, on Tuesday while doing a live interview for the Activo Deportes show Bla, Bla, Bla Deportivo.

Cuernavaca is located in the state of Morelos, just south of Mexico City.

As Vargas spoke on camera, the driver’s side door suddenly opened. A man with a gun appeared and began demanding the keys to the car, along with Vargas’ phone and wallet.

During the broadcast, the gunman could reportedly be heard chambering a round before ordering, “The key, quick. Key, phones and wallets, quick.”

The show’s host, Ed Martinez, watched in shock as Vargas stayed calm, gathered his belongings, and stepped out of the vehicle.

Vargas, who also works as communications director for Mexico’s National Professional Basketball League, could be heard trying to calm the gunman down.

“Calm down, calm down,” he said.

The video then went dark as the terrifying encounter continued off-camera.

It is unclear whether the carjacker realized Vargas was live on air and that the entire crime was being streamed.

Martinez later posted an update on Instagram saying Vargas was not physically hurt, but was badly shaken.

“Thankfully, he’s safe, but very scared,” Martinez wrote.

Vargas’ car, phone, and wallet were stolen during the robbery.

Martinez also asked the public to help identify the man in the video and report him to authorities.

As of the latest reports, no arrest had been announced.

The shocking incident comes as Mexico is preparing to help host the upcoming World Cup, with Mexico City set to host the opening match in less than a month. For viewers, the live broadcast became a frightening reminder of how quickly a routine moment can turn dangerous.
