A terrifying crash on a major California freeway left one woman dead and 32 other people injured after a semi-truck crossed the median and slammed into traffic.
The crash happened around 8:55 a.m. Saturday, June 20, on the westbound 210 Freeway in Irwindale, according to California Highway Patrol traffic logs.
Authorities said the truck, described in the logs as a “red semi,” crossed through the center divider wall from the eastbound lanes into the westbound lanes.
At least three vehicles were involved in the crash.
When Los Angeles County Fire Department crews arrived, they found one person dead at the scene. Local outlets KTLA 5 and ABC 7 reported that the victim was an adult woman, though her name has not been released.
Ten people were taken to a nearby hospital for treatment. Two of them were listed in critical condition, and six of the injured victims were minors, according to the fire department.
Another 22 people reported minor injuries but declined medical care.
The Los Angeles County Fire Department later described the crash as a “mass casualty” incident because of the number of people hurt.
Photos from the scene showed a large Target trailer stopped against the highway divider. In one image, a white van could be seen smashed into the side of the truck.
A Target spokesperson confirmed that the trailer was being transported by a third-party carrier and that the driver was not a Target employee.
“We are deeply saddened by a fatal crash involving a Target trailer near Irwindale, California,” the spokesperson said in a statement. “Our thoughts and condolences are with all those impacted by this tragic incident, as well as their loved ones. We’re working closely with local law enforcement and will refer additional questions to them at this time.”
The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
The wreck caused major delays and forced extensive freeway closures, including a shutdown of westbound lanes, according to CHP traffic logs.
