A California camping trip took a truly disgusting turn after a man dropped his sunglasses into a campsite toilet and somehow ended up falling in while trying to get them back.

The bizarre rescue happened Saturday afternoon at Camp Edison, a campground located in the Sierra Nevada foothills in Fresno County.

According to the Fresno County Sheriff’s Office, first responders were called to the campground around 2:30 p.m. for what was described as a confined-space rescue.

When crews arrived, they learned the man had fallen into a campsite vault toilet after trying to retrieve his sunglasses.

For anyone lucky enough not to know, a vault toilet is a waterless, non-flush toilet often used at campgrounds. Waste drops into a large sealed tank underground, which is exactly where the man became trapped.

Authorities said the man had been stuck inside the chemical storage tank for about 10 to 15 minutes before rescuers were able to get him out.

Sgt. Chris Tullus told YourCentralValley.com that the situation was relayed with help from a Spanish translator.

“Via a Spanish translator, they advised that the subject had fallen into the chemical storage tank,” Tullus said. “Law enforcement, Camp Edison staff, and fire personnel responded and were able to safely get him out, decontaminate him, and, he’ll be ok.”

Thankfully, the man did not report any serious injuries.

After he was pulled out, Cal Fire crews hosed him off to decontaminate him. He was then able to walk away from the nightmare with no major harm done.

His pride, however, may need a little more time to recover.

The man’s sunglasses may have seemed worth saving in the moment, but after a rescue from inside a campsite toilet, most people would probably agree some things are better left behind.

At least he made it out safely — and with one camping story nobody around him is likely to forget.
