A passenger died after a terrifying mid-flight meltdown on a plane in Russia, where he allegedly ran through the cabin with scissors and tried to force his way into the cockpit.
The disturbing incident happened Sunday on a flight from Moscow to Omsk, a city in Siberia, according to local reports.
The man, identified only as Vladimir E., reportedly became aggressive during the flight and allegedly threatened fellow passengers with scissor blades. Witnesses claimed he moved through the cabin in a panic-inducing rampage before trying to break into the flight deck.
Terrified passengers eventually tackled him to the floor as crew members worked to bring the chaos under control. According to reports, the man’s hands were restrained with zip ties to stop him from hurting anyone on board.
After he appeared to calm down, he was reportedly untied. But moments later, the situation took a dramatic turn when the man suddenly lost consciousness.
The flight continued on to Omsk, where paramedics were waiting after the plane landed. The passenger was later pronounced dead at the airport.
Police have now opened an investigation into what happened, including whether the way the man was restrained may have played a role in his death. Russian authorities are reportedly looking into possible death by negligence, and passengers on the flight are expected to be questioned.
Experts have warned that there are still too many unknowns to say exactly what caused the man to die.
Russian addiction specialist Vasily Shurov said investigators will need to wait for autopsy results before drawing conclusions.
“We need to await the results of the brawler’s autopsy, as it’s truly unclear what happened on the Moscow-Omsk flight,” Shurov said, according to local reports.
He said several possibilities may need to be examined, including whether the passenger had a medical emergency, had consumed too much alcohol or suffered injuries during the struggle.
Shurov also said the way the man was restrained could become a key part of the investigation, noting that it may have affected circulation or contributed to a medical complication.
For now, officials have not confirmed the man’s cause of death.
The frightening incident left passengers shaken and has raised fresh questions about how airlines and travelers should respond when someone becomes violent in the air.
No other injuries were reported in the incident.
