A Michigan woman and an 11-year-old child were killed in a devastating early-morning crash after their disabled SUV was struck from behind by a semi-truck on an Ohio highway.
The crash happened around 4:07 a.m. Sunday, June 28, on northbound Interstate 75 in Pusheta Township, according to the Wapakoneta Post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol.
Authorities said 48-year-old Holly Williams, of Howell, Michigan, was driving a 2001 Ford Explorer north on I-75 when the SUV went off the left side of the roadway and hit the median cables.
The Explorer then re-entered the highway and became disabled in the right lane.
A passenger in the SUV, 54-year-old James Johnson, of Limestone, Tennessee, got out and tried to push the vehicle off the roadway, according to a preliminary investigation.
Williams and an 11-year-old child remained inside the SUV.
Moments later, a 2018 Freightliner semi-truck traveling north in the right lane slammed into the back of the disabled Explorer.
The force of the crash pushed the SUV off the road and into Johnson, officials said.
Williams and the child were both killed in the collision and pronounced dead at the scene. Authorities said they were both wearing seatbelts.
Johnson was taken to an area hospital with minor injuries.
The driver of the semi-truck, identified as Charles Pagel, was also wearing a seatbelt and was not injured.
Multiple agencies responded to the scene after the deadly crash.
Officials said drugs and alcohol are not believed to have been factors in the collision.
The Wapakoneta Post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol is continuing to investigate the crash.
Authorities have not said what the relationship was between Williams, Johnson and the 11-year-old child.
