A tense confrontation aboard a Carnival cruise ship turned physical after one passenger repeatedly got into another woman’s face and appeared to block her from walking away.
Viral video from the incident shows a Black woman slapping a white woman in the head during an argument in a lounge area on the ship’s deck.
The Black passenger appeared to be holding a drink and a lit cigarette at the time of the slap, somehow keeping hold of both as the confrontation erupted.
The footage was posted to Instagram on August 31 and quickly spread across social media, where viewers fiercely debated who was responsible for the situation escalating.

It remains unclear exactly what sparked the original argument.
According to the caption accompanying the viral video, however, the white woman had repeatedly approached the Black passenger while she had been relaxing with a drink.
Footage shows the disagreement becoming increasingly heated as the two women stand just inches apart.
At one point, the Black woman can be heard issuing a blunt warning.
“Get the f–k out of my face,” she says.
Despite the warning, the other passenger continued standing in front of her and appeared to repeatedly block her path as she attempted to move past.
The confrontation then attracted the attention of other people nearby.
Two individuals eventually positioned themselves behind the white woman, making the increasingly tense scene appear to be three people confronting the lone Black passenger.
Moments later, the Black woman swung her hand and struck the other woman on the side of the head.
The woman who was hit appeared stunned by the sudden slap.
Her shocked reaction quickly became one of the most talked-about moments from the footage, with many social media users arguing that she had ignored repeated warnings to back away.
“Her looking shocked afterward is my favorite part,” one commenter wrote. “What did you think would happen if you repeatedly blocked a woman and got inches from her face?”
Others pointed to the number of people gathering around the Black passenger before the slap.
“A group of ‘ppl’ surrounding 1 individual… My reflexes would’ve kicked in, too,” another viewer wrote.
Some commenters found humor in the fact that the woman managed to remain holding both her drink and cigarette during the confrontation.
“Never approach a person who can hold a drink AND a lit cigarette in the same hand,” one person joked.
The commenter went on to describe her as a “seasoned tussler” with impressive multitasking skills before offering some tongue-in-cheek advice: “Just apologize and walk away.”
While many viewers sided with the woman who delivered the slap, the available footage does not show everything that happened before the confrontation, and neither passenger’s identity has been publicly confirmed.
It is also unclear which Carnival ship the incident occurred aboard or what itinerary the passengers were traveling on.
As of September 4, Carnival Cruise Line had not publicly commented on the viral confrontation, and there was no immediate indication that either woman had been arrested, cited or removed from the ship. It also remains unclear whether the passengers faced any disciplinary action from the cruise line.
The incident comes after several other highly publicized confrontations involving Carnival passengers.
In June, a massive fight broke out involving 16 people near the customs area at PortMiami after passengers disembarked from the Carnival Conquest following a Bahamas cruise. Carnival subsequently placed the people involved on its “Do Not Sail” list, preventing them from traveling with the cruise line again.
Carnival also permanently banned 24 passengers following another violent confrontation in Galveston, Texas, in April 2025 after a Caribbean cruise.
The cruise line has repeatedly maintained that it has a zero-tolerance approach to fighting and disruptive behavior aboard its ships.
