Transit Worker and Mom of Three Tragically Killed by Oncoming Subway Train

A New York City transit worker and mother of three was tragically killed after she was struck by a subway train while working on the tracks in the Bronx late Thursday night.

Moet McCullum, 41, was working as a construction flagger on the southbound tracks at the 161st Street-Yankee Stadium station when a D train entered the station and struck her around 11:30 p.m., according to the MTA.

McCullum had been working for the transit agency for just 11 months, transit sources said.

“This is a difficult day. Last night, we tragically lost a member of our MTA family,” MTA NYC Transit President Demetrius Crichlow said in a statement.

Crichlow said he visited the hospital and the scene Friday morning and also met with McCullum’s family.

“The incident is under investigation,” he said. “I ask that we all keep Ms. McCullum and her family in our thoughts and prayers.”

Construction flaggers play a critical safety role during subway work, warning approaching train operators about active work zones and crews on the tracks.

The Transport Workers Union Local 100 said it was “deeply saddened” by McCullum’s death.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with our member’s family, loved ones, friends, and coworkers during this incredibly difficult time,” the union said. “As we learn more, we ask everyone to keep the family in your prayers and our members working throughout the system in your thoughts.”

McCullum’s death comes after other serious incidents involving MTA workers on subway tracks in recent years.

In November 2023, MTA flagger Hilarion Joseph, 57, was fatally struck by a train while working on the tracks at the 34th Street-Herald Square station in Manhattan.

Like McCullum, Joseph had been working for the MTA for only 11 months when he was killed.

Another MTA flagger, 64, was seriously injured in June 2024 after being struck by a Manhattan-bound F train in downtown Brooklyn. Officials said he suffered a serious head injury.

That worker had been employed as a track worker for six years and was part of a four-person crew conducting track inspections at the time.

The circumstances surrounding McCullum’s death remain under investigation.
