A child has died and six other children were injured after a vehicle rolled off a rural road in a devastating crash outside Melbourne, Australia.
Emergency crews were called to the scene near the intersection of Nerowie Road and Parwan-Exford Road in Parwan, about 28 miles west of Melbourne, at around 4 p.m. local time on Tuesday, Sept. 8.
Victoria Police described the incident as a “single-vehicle fatal rollover.”
According to 7News, the vehicle left Nerowie Road near a T-intersection before rolling and suffering extensive damage.
Emergency crews desperately tried to save one school-aged child, but the youngster could not be revived.
“Despite CPR being performed, one school-aged child died at the scene,” Victoria Police said.
Six other children were injured.
One child suffered critical injuries and was airlifted to the Royal Children’s Hospital. Five additional children were taken to hospitals with injuries that police said were not believed to be life-threatening.
ABC reported that three of those children were also transported to the Royal Children’s Hospital, while the remaining injured children were taken to Western Hospital Sunshine.
A woman involved in the crash was taken to Royal Melbourne Hospital for observation.
The identities and ages of those involved have not been publicly released.
Photos from the scene showed a badly damaged vehicle surrounded by emergency crews on the side of the rural road. The vehicle appeared to have a shattered windshield and a badly crushed hood.
The scale of the emergency response was significant.
An Ambulance Victoria spokesperson told ABC that two specialist Air Ambulance Victoria helicopter crews, two Mobile Intensive Care Ambulance paramedic crews and seven Advanced Life Support paramedic crews responded.
Paramedics assessed a total of eight people at the scene.
Victoria Police are now investigating what caused the vehicle to leave the road and roll over.
Authorities are asking anyone who witnessed the crash or has relevant CCTV or dashcam footage to contact Crime Stoppers.
Victoria Police and Ambulance Victoria have also been contacted for additional comment as the investigation continues.
