A new detail has emerged from the deadly Amazon cargo jet crash at Miami International Airport, with a witness saying one of the pilots appeared shaken and told his wife, “My career is over,” moments after escaping the wreck.
The horrifying crash happened just before 2 p.m. Sunday when Prime Air Flight 7598, a Boeing 767 operated by 21 Air, was landing in Miami after a flight from Puerto Rico.
The massive cargo jet overshot the runway, slammed into multiple vehicles and burst into flames.
Five people were killed and five others were injured, according to federal investigators.
The two pilots, identified as Felipe Silva Molina, 37, and Joseph Carroll, 55, managed to escape the wreckage with only minor injuries.
Witness Abraham Altamar, who was working in a nearby airport building, said he saw one of the pilots shortly after the crash.
“He was shaking and a little injured in his forehead and his hand,” Altamar told CBS.
Altamar said he asked the pilot whether he needed someone to call 911.
The pilot reportedly replied, “No, we already called them.”
Altamar then handed over his phone so the pilot could contact his wife and tell her he had survived.
“Just tell my mom that I was in the accident, but I’m already out of the plane, that I’m good,” the pilot reportedly said during the call.
But despite telling his family he was physically OK, Altamar said the pilot was visibly distraught.
“My career is over,” the pilot reportedly told his wife.
It remains unclear whether the pilot Altamar helped was Carroll or Silva Molina.
Carroll is listed as a captain with 21 Air, while Silva Molina is listed as a first officer.
Altamar described witnessing the crash as both “surreal” and “scary.”
Federal investigators are now trying to determine exactly what caused the jet to leave the runway.
National Transportation Safety Board Chairwoman Jennifer Homendy said investigators are focusing on whether the aircraft may have touched down too far along the runway to stop safely.
The aftermath was catastrophic.
The jet struck multiple vehicles after leaving the runway, including a van carrying seven people.
Homendy described the scene as “utter devastation.”
“I would describe it in one word as devastating,” she said.
Images from the crash site showed the cargo plane resting badly damaged after the impact, with sections of the aircraft torn apart.
Video captured shortly after the crash showed the huge Boeing 767 leaning to one side as flames burned around it and thick black smoke poured into the sky.
Bystanders could only watch as emergency crews rushed toward the wreckage.
Investigators were still examining the damaged jet Tuesday, including its destroyed wing and engine, as they worked to piece together the final moments before the deadly runway overrun.
For now, investigators have not announced a definitive cause of the crash.
